I’ve always like hen and chicks — the plant, I mean, not the fowl. In the south, the plants are called “hen-and-biddies”.
Hen and chicks are succulents, short-lived (about three years), and in the year of their demise, presumably after producing many biddies, they grow a tall center blooming stalk.
Although we’ve only lived here since 2014, a couple of our hens are ready to go out in a blaze of glory.
